CQI-35 Wiring Harness Quality Work Group

The growing complexity of automotive electrical systems has increased demand for high-quality, reliable wiring harnesses. Challenges include safety (wiring failures, breakdowns, short circuits, accidents); high costs (warranty claims, repairs, manufacturing inefficiencies); and poor quality (low consumer confidence).

To combat these challenges, a group of AIAG volunteers led by Irving Rodriguez, PhD, electrical STA manager for Ford Motor Company, have developed the CQI-35 Wiring Harness Quality Guidelines. The work was expected to take three to four years, but Rodriguez and his work group got it done in nine months.

“That’s not a first draft,” he clarifies. “That’s the entire guideline written and approved. We set aside a full week at a time to meet in person and work on it. It took four, week-long sessions to get it done.”

The CQI-35 Wiring Harness Quality Guidelines provides a framework for consistent quality improvement. Benefits include enhanced safety by reducing failures and ensuring safety standard compliance; efficient manufacturing by minimizing defects and scrap; improved reliability and fewer warranty issues; and supporting advanced systems in electric, hybrid, and ICE vehicles.
On behalf of the CQI-35 work group, Rodriguez presented the new guideline at AIAG’s 2024 Quality Summit. “It was the first time for a CQI verified for wiring, the first time a CQI was developed in Mexico, and the first time that a Mexican presented at this forum,” he says.

Now Rodriquez challenges his OEM and supplier colleagues with this question: Why not develop more continuous quality improvement standards? “We can create specific requirements as customers, but how can we make sure that the suppliers are motivated? Requirements should not just be best for customers — they must be what’s best for the entire industry. This is the first step in achieving the excellence we are all looking for.”
